Since its inception, the University of Minnesota ALS Program has been a leader in both ALS research and in clinical care. The ALS Program has driven research progress by applying clinical experiences to research that focuses on real-world impacts. Our goal is to connect clinicians at a nationwide level with scientists who can fill critical knowledge gaps, advance treatment, and engage patients and sponsors.
Clinical Treatment Center of Excellence:
In addition to our robust research program, the University of Minnesota ALS Certified Treatment Center of Excellence provides comprehensive management for people living with ALS, and has the ALS Association's highest level of certification. The clinic meets weekly and is staffed by two board-certified Neuromuscular Medicine neurologists as well as a nurse, physical therapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist, dietician, genetic counselor, research coordinator, social worker, and ALS Association representative.
Research Program:
Our strategy to combat ALS includes synthesizing laboratory discoveries (e.g. biomarker development), clinical trials and discovery, community engagement (e.g. patients with lived experience panels), and treatment advancements. Our research strategy is illustrated below.
